Projecting a logo onto a wall using GOBO projectors. Selection guide!

Projecting a logo onto a wall using GOBO projectors. Selection guide! Discover proven tips that will help with wall / facade / building / floor logo projection. Do you want your brand to stand out, but are bored with classic banners and billboards? We present a modern way of branding – projecting a logo with light. GOBO projectors are an innovative solution that transforms any surface (wall, floor, facade or sidewalk) into an effective advertising space. This technology is ideal for stores, hotels, restaurants, bars or showrooms looking for a clean, modern and elegant visual style.

Unlike conventional presentation projectors commonly used in offices, the GOBO projector is specially designed to project static, sharp and clear images (logos, text, graphics). It does not use digital transmission via USB. Instead, the light passes through a physically manufactured template. This guarantees unrivalled stability and readability, especially at twilight, in the evening and in dark spaces.

If you're looking for a way to replace a traditional sign or banner with something that catches the eye with light, this article will tell you everything you need to know.

How does GOBO projection technology actually work?

The GOBO projector uses a powerful LED light source. However, the light beam does not pass through an LCD panel, but through a special glass GOBO lens onto which your logo, text or graphic is physically etched. The light penetrates this template and projects a perfectly sharp image onto the selected surface.

Think of it as a powerful LED slide projector designed for advertising. Thanks to this solution, the projection is stable, has excellent contrast and sharpness, which is key for long-lasting and effective advertising projection.

The use of GOBO projectors is extremely wide:

  • Projection of a logo onto a building facade.
  • Elegant wayfinding on the shop floor or at reception.
  • Attractive customer guidance before entering the premises.
  • Brand promotion in bars, clubs, hotels and corporate events.
  • Light projection onto the pavement.

Production of GOBO lenses with your own logo: From artwork to lens

One of the most common questions is: “Can I upload a logo via USB?” The answer is: No. The logo cannot be uploaded to the GOBO projector from a mobile app or stored on an SD card. Each logo must be physically etched onto a separate glass GOBO lens.

The process is as follows:

  • Send your logo in a suitable format ( .jpg, .png, .pdf or vector data).
  • Our technology will prepare the artwork for production and etch it onto the glass GOBO lens.
  • For simple logos, a 2-color design may be sufficient.
  • If the logo has multiple colors, gradients or details, we choose a full-color GOBO logo.
  • Insert the finished lens into the projector.

Key tip: Contrast is extremely important during production. The higher the contrast of the logo, the more readable the projection will be. If you place the logo on a black background, only the logo itself will be visible when projected, without a circle or background around it. This is ideal for most company logos when you want a clean projection without unnecessary elements. If you want to change the logo, for example for a seasonal campaign, just have a new GOBO lens made and simply replace it in the projector. Selected models support a multi-logo tray, allowing you to have multiple lenses ready and switch between them.

When is logo projection most effective?

Light projection is most visible in conditions where the light from the projector does not have to compete with ambient light. This means that you will achieve the best effect during twilight, evening, night or in a darker interior.

In strong daylight, especially in direct sunlight, the visibility of the projection is significantly weaker. Indoors, the projection can be clearly visible even during the day if the room is not too brightly lit. For outdoor advertising on a building or facade, we recommend using it after dark, when the projection is fully visible. If there is strong street lighting in the area, it is necessary to choose a more powerful model with some extra power in reserve.

How to choose the right GOBO projector power?

Choosing the right power is the most important decision. It doesn't mean "biggest is better." It depends on three factors: the distance between the projector and the surface, the logo size, and the lighting conditions.

For smaller interiors, reception areas and stores with short projection distances, a 7W or 15W LED projector is sufficient.

For projection onto a building, pavement or a larger wall, a more powerful GOBO projector is needed, for example 50W, 100W or 200W.

When choosing, keep in mind these simple rules:

  • The greater the distance and the brighter the environment, the higher the power you need.
  • The larger the logo you want to project, the more the light will spread. The result may be a larger, but less clear image. Therefore, for large projections, we always recommend a more powerful model.

Indicative distribution by performance

GOBO projector performance Approximate distance Suitable use
7W up to 3 m smaller interior, reception, shop
15W up to 5 m interior, showroom, entrance
25W up to 5 m interior or short outdoor projection
35W up to 7 m wall, corridor, small traffic
50W approx. 10-20 m entrance, sidewalk, smaller facade
80W approx. 50 m larger outdoor areas
100W approx. 70 m buildings, walls, sidewalks
200W approx. 100 m large buildings, professional branding
700W large areas large format projection
Zoom model according to settings flexible projection size

Optics and logo size: What does a 0.65 or 1.0 lens mean?

For selected 50W projectors and above, it is possible to use interchangeable lenses (optics), for example with a scale factor of 0.65 or 1.0. This lens allows you to achieve a different projected logo width at the same distance.

A wider lens (e.g. 0.65) will create a larger logo, but the light will be spread over a larger area. The image will be larger, but may be less bright and have lower contrast than with a narrower lens (e.g. the default 0.3). When choosing, it is important to find a compromise between the size of the logo and its brightness.

Simple rule: Wider lens = larger logo + greater light spread = lower brightness + lower contrast. For large projections, a more powerful GOBO projector is therefore again needed.

Where can you successfully use a GOBO projector?

1. Indoor light projection: Wall, floor, reception

Projecting a logo onto a wall is the most common solution in stores, showrooms, offices, reception areas, restaurants or hotels. It is often more practical than other solutions – for short projection distances indoors, a lower-powered model (7W to 35W) is sufficient.

By choosing a GOBO projector, you will achieve a modern and clean style that looks elegant. It is also ideal for use on floors or walkways in front of the store to attract visitors' attention.

2. Large format projection: Building facade and outdoor

Outdoor projection is more challenging. Facades are often in the dark, but there may be strong street lighting nearby. To achieve the desired effect, you need a higher-powered model (at least 50W to 100W, and 200W or more for large buildings).

Don't forget about accessories, installation and the production of GOBO lenses. An outdoor projector must have a durable body and suitable protection against water and dust (minimum IP67). Choosing the right angle and distance is also key in these installations.

Choosing a GOBO projector: Important parameters to consider

1. Static or rotational projection?

Static projection means that the logo remains in one place without moving. It looks discreet and elegant, making it suitable for reception areas or discreet business signage.

Rotating logo projection displays a rotating logo, making it more visually appealing. The rotating effect is perfect for bars, clubs, events and promotions. Most of our more powerful projectors have a switch that lets you easily choose whether the logo is projected as a static or rotating image.

2. IP67 protection and water resistance

If you plan to install it outdoors, always check the IP rating. For permanent installation on a facade or outdoors, a minimum IP67 rating is required, which guarantees resistance to rain and dust. For indoor projections, a model without a high IP rating is sufficient.

The most common mistakes when choosing and installing

  • Projector with insufficient power for the projection distance: The logo will be indistinct and difficult to read.
  • Expecting digital upload: Remember that the logo cannot be uploaded via USB – you must have your own glass GOBO lens made.
  • Expecting the projection to be clearly visible in strong daylight: Light projection is particularly effective after dark and in darker environments.
  • Choosing a logo that is too large at the expense of brightness: A larger logo spreads the light over a larger area, resulting in lower brightness and contrast. For a large projection, choose a more powerful projector.
  • Installation without considering the angle: Make sure the projector is installed so that the projected image is as distortion-free as possible and easily readable.
